Movement is Medicine Video Series

“Has your doctor told you to make lifestyle changes but you’re not sure where to start?”

Dr. Brad Fenton asks that question at the start of every video in this series, because it’s the one he hears most. Patients leave an appointment knowing they should move more, eat better and sleep longer. What a short visit rarely leaves room for is the how.

That’s what Lifestyle is Life is for. It’s a 6-part video series with Dr. Fenton on lifestyle medicine, which is the use of exercise, food, sleep and daily habits as actual medical treatment. Each episode runs 3 to 4 minutes.

The first video lays out the 6 pillars: nutrition, movement, sleep, stress, risky substances and social connection. Dr. Fenton opens it with a figure that stops most people. As much as 80% of chronic conditions like heart disease, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure can be prevented, managed or even reversed by what you do outside the clinic.

The 5 videos that follow stay on one pillar: movement. Dr. Fenton calls that stretch Movement Is Medicine, and he treats it the way he’d treat any prescription. What it’s for. How much you need. How to take it safely. How to fit it into a week that’s already full.

“The Basics” covers what exercise actually treats, from heart disease and type 2 diabetes to depression. “How Much You Need” gets into the dose, which works out to 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, or about 22 minutes a day. “The Four Pillars” breaks movement into 4 kinds, aerobic, strength, flexibility and balance, and shows how to cover all 4.

“Safety” is for anyone worried about getting hurt, or starting over after time away. “Finding the Time” takes on the biggest objection of all with what Dr. Fenton calls exercise snacks: 5 and 10 minute bouts that count, a walking meeting instead of a conference room, 10 air squats during a commercial break.

None of it requires a gym membership. That’s deliberate.

The whole series runs about 20 minutes. Watch it in order, or pick the one video that answers your question. If something in it raises a question about your own health, that’s what your next visit is for.
