Movement is Medicine – A video series with Dr. Brad Fenton
“Has your doctor told you to make lifestyle changes but you’re not sure where to start?”
Dr. Brad Fenton opens every one of these videos with that question, because it’s the one he hears most. He’s a physician at Independence Park Medical Services here in Anchorage, and in this series he treats movement the way he’d treat any other prescription. What it’s for. How much you need. How to take it safely. How to fit it into a week that’s already full.
Each video runs 3 to 4 minutes. You can watch one on a lunch break.
Movement Is Medicine is part of Lifestyle is Life, our series on lifestyle medicine, which is the use of exercise, food, sleep and daily habits as real medical treatment. The first video lays out all 6 pillars. The five that follow stay on movement, because it’s the pillar patients ask about most and the one that trips people up first.
You won’t need a gym membership or an hour a day. The target Dr. Fenton works toward is 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, about 22 minutes a day, and he’ll show you several ways to get there. Some of them don’t look like exercise at all.
The 6 pillars: nutrition, movement, sleep, stress, risky substances and social connection.
What exercise actually treats, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes and depression.
The dose. What the guidelines call for, and what that looks like on an ordinary week.
Aerobic, strength, flexibility and balance, and how to cover all four.
Starting when you’re worried about getting hurt, and adjusting the dose to what your body can do.
Exercise snacks. Why 5 and 10 minute bouts count, and how to work them into a normal day.
Watch in order, or jump to the video that answers your question. If something here raises a question about your own health, bring it to your next appointment. That’s what it’s for.
