What does the 3rd class medical reform mean for you?

As Alaskans, many of us rely on air transportation to get around the state as well as to get out of the state. Small airplanes/floatplanes are common to own and fly for many Alaskan residents. This means that the 3rd class medical reform will most likely impact you in one way or another. This bill has been passed through the House of Representatives, onto the President.

So what does this mean for you?

  • For those who have held regular or special medical insurance within the past 10 years: Another medical certificate will never be needed.
  • For those who have never held a medical certificate or it expired 10 years ago: A third class medical certificate will be needed one time only.
  • There are mandatory visits to your personal physician once every four years where you will be examined for various issues. (The form from this visit must be included in your logbook as well.)
  • Every two years you are required to take an online training in aeromedical factors.
