The Importance of Stretching

The Importance of Stretching

There is always talk about stretching. Everyone has their idea of what you need to do, for how long, or if you even need to do it. Stretching has benefits regardless of how you choose to see things done. Some studies show that stretching helps and others show that it doesn’t reduce muscle soreness after exercise.

Some of the benefits that you can get from stretching:

  • Improve flexibility
  • Help range of motion
  • Help performance in activities
  • Decreases risk of injuries
  • Allows you to be effective as possible
  • Increases blood flow to muscles

There are also some things to consider when stretching:

  • Stretching should not be your warm-up
  • No bouncing
  • Hold the stretch
  • Don’t aim for pain – Tension, yes. Pain, no.
  • Stretch what you will be using
  • Stretch not just before activity

You always want to make sure that you stretch with caution. Beware of conditions you have or injuries so that you do not aggravate them while stretching.  Also, stretching will not guarantee you an injury free event, there is always a chance to overuse something and create injury. Talking to your doctor is always recommended before doing any type of activity.
